Luca Pagano (guitar), Renaud Millet-Lacombe (B3 Hammond organ) and Tobie Langel (drums) were playing in trio when they asked Maurice Magnoni (saxophones) to join the band for a couple of concerts in Italy. It was in 2003 and Direzione Sud was founded. The quartet now functions as a collective. The musicians share administrative tasks and decision making, whether the issues be of financial, logistic or artistic matter. This way of working along with intensive rehearsal periods and numerous public appearances has brought a rare musical and human cohesion to Direzione Sud, vividly reflected by the band's tight sound and strong identity. At ease both in an acoustic setting and an electric one - probably because of the Hammond organ - the quartet fruitfully blends the energy and groove drawn from the American jazz tradition to the rich harmonic content and colors of European jazz. Direzione Sud's repertoire is composed of originals written by Maurice Magnoni and Luca Pagano. Praised by the general public and critics alike during its first Swiss, Italian and Albanian tour in 2003, Direzione Sud will again tour Switzerland in January 2005 as part of the acclaimed Suisse Diagonales Jazz festival. Direzione Sud's first CD, Estrella del Norte, has been released on the jazz label Altrisuoni in November 2004.
