A regular visitor to the Jazzclub „Gambrinus“, where Jalazz play frequently, describes the band as follows: „...Jalazz is certainly the most exciting and refreshing jazz formation in the East of Switzerland…”
“Jalazz” was formed in 2003. Stefan Widmer and Jan Geiger studied together at the Jazzschool in St. Gallen. They were looking for a formation where they could convert their musical ideas to sound. They found a matching piano player, Fabian Mueller, who Stefan already knew from teacher-training-college in Rorschach. One year later bass-player Dusan Prusák joined the band. And so, the present formation of “Jalazz” came to life.
All members of Jalazz are very adept at playing their instruments. Each member composes pieces for the band, and they all have their own very individual style. Thus the band has a big variety of own compositions in their repertoire. But their music is more than just a sum of their abilities. In their compact style they synergise to an ensemble, in where one finds influences of impressionism, bebop, hardbop, free-jazz and afrocuban rhythms in lively improvisations melt to a unity. Lacking words, one could call this „contemporary jazz“.
