Schroeder stammte aus einer musikalischen Familie; die Mutter spielte Klavier, der Vater Trompete. Mit elf Jahren spielte er in der Band seines Vaters und auf der Highschool Klarinette in der Schulband. Er studierte an der Musikschule der University of Wisconsin (1932). Nach einem Jahr ging er nach Milwaukee, wo er in eigener Band und mit Wild Bill Davison spielte. 1939 zog er nach New York und spielte in eigener Band und ein Jahr in der Bigband von Joe Marsala und Marty Marsala, mit Miff Mole (1943) und Wild Bill Davison. Ab 1943 arbeitete er bei Eddie Condon als dessen regelmäßiger Pianist, auch in der Eröffnung von dessen Club 1945. 1957 war er mit diesem auf Großbritannien-Tour; er war an vielen von Aufnahmen Condons bis Anfang der 1960er Jahre beteiligt. 1961 bis 1964 spielte er mit den Dukes of Dixieland. Ende der 1960er Jahre spielte er mit Tony Parenti.

Unter eigenem Namen nahm er nur 1944 mit einem Trio auf (bei Black and White); er ist auch auf Platten von Sidney Bechet, Jack Teagarden und Bobby Hackett zu hören (Wikipedia).
