Art Tatums Sweet Lorraine brachte Previn dazu, sich mit dem Jazz zu beschäftigen. Mit dreizehn Jahren begann Previn seine Karriere mit Radioaufnahmen, u. a. mit Hoagy Carmichael. Mit fünfzehn gab er ein Jazz-Konzert im Konzertsaal des Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Sein damaliger Impresario Laguna gründete dann eine Schallplattenfirma, für die Previn 1945/46 seine ersten Aufnahmen machte, unter anderem mit Jazzmusikern wie Willie Smith und Red Callender. Aufgenommen wurden auch Previns eigene Kompositionen wie Sunset in Blue. Er zählte zu den erstklassigen Jazzmusikern der Vereinigten Staaten und spielte mit Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie sowie Billie Holiday. Für das Trioalbum My Fair Lady mit Shelly Manne und Leroy Vinnegar erhielt er 1956 die erste Goldene Schallplatte der Jazzgeschichte (Wikipedia).
