Die Dixie Hummingbirds wurden 1928 in Greenville, South Carolina gegründet. Die Gruppe entstand als Quartett von Schulfreunden unter der Leitung von James B. Davis, die in lokalen Kirchen sangen. Der ursprüngliche Name war \"The Sterling High School Quartet\", später änderten sie den Namen in Dixie Hummingbirds.

Die Gruppe ist eine einflussreiche amerikanische Gospel-Gesangsformation, bekannt für ihre mitreißende Bühnenpräsenz und ihren Beitrag zur Entwicklung des Gospel, insbesondere des sogenannten \"Hard Gospel\". 1938 kam der damals 13-jährige Ira Tucker als Leadsänger zur Gruppe.
