Es war lange Zeit ruhig um den Ausnahmepianisten Joe Sample, der einst als Leader und Gründer der "Crusaders" Riesenerfolge verbuchte. Seine Aufnahmen auf "GRP" liegen jetzt auch schon einige Jahre zurück. Doch das wird jetzt anders, denn Verve hat den Künstler unter ihre Fittiche genommen. "The Pecan Tree" stellt Sample wieder als Leader heraus und seine illustre Karriere dürfte hier seine Fortsetzung haben. Er wird unterstützt von Peter Wolf (synth), Dean Parks (g), Jay Anderson (b), Larry Aberman und James Gadson (d), den Percussionisten Lenny Castro und Paulinho da Costa, mit Vocals von Howard Hewett und Lizz Wright.
