The Science Fair's lyrics are inspired by modern science and society. The ensemble's debut CD welcomes the listener to a futuristic science fair. Here different characters interpret themes such as global warming, online relationships, genetics, and others in a wide variety of perspectives and moods.
The text genres include Jazz Poetry, Spoken Word, and Vocalese (lyrics set to recorded jazz solos). The original Vocalese recordings are set to improvised solos by singer Mark Murphy and saxophonist Adrian Pflugshaupt.
The compositions are written in a variety of styles, textures, and harmonic approaches, chosen to accommodate the lyrics in each case. They move between open, flexible forms and more structured ones. Instrumentation combinations include the complete ensemble, a quartet, a duo, or even solo voice. As a result, each of the ensemble's six musicians may be heard in many different situations.
The Science Fair fits naturally in many settings rarely associated with music. Some compositions have been performed at scientific events. Others deal with educational topics (such as evolution), but approach science from unusual angles
