Art Hodes was one of the great jazz communicators. He went beyond merely playing jazz, which he did superbly - he also wrote about it, broadcast it and even started a small record label to market it. I'm not sure why Hodes was compelled to go so far beyond being a fine jazz painist, but we should be glad he did.
This is the second DVD drawn from a 1979 TV series which had limited distribution. Bill Price and Bill Drake, successful St. Paul businessmen with a lifelong interest in jazz, raised impressive corporate sponsorship and produced five half-hour shows.
The shows are set in "Art's Place", a ficitional boite created on a soundstage. Art plays the genial host and pianist.
